Located in the vibrant Annex neighborhood, close to Yorkville and Rosedale, Orris Labs provides a hands-on experience that’s both educational and fun. At Orris Labs, the workshop begins with an introduction to the history of perfume and the different fragrance families. You’ll begin with your base notes which are usually the heavier component, then you will move on to the middle and top notes which are lighter in contrast. Perfumes with lighter notes are usually more ideal for summer fragrances while perfumes with heavier notes are usually better suited for winter. Under the guidance of experienced perfumers, you’ll experiment with various combinations, discovering how to balance and layer scents to create a harmonious and distinctive fragrance. Of course, the different oils can be ovewhelming so Orris Labs recommends stepping outside for fresh air or smelling coffee beans which helps mitigate headaches from the strong scents. You can add up as many notes as you wish but they typically recommend aiming for seven.
Once you’ve chosen your notes, your instructor will find the right ratios to mix them. The best part? You get to take your creation home!
